“Babies!”: Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies stun fans with throwback pics

The Morning Show hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies have delighted fans with throwback footage from their earlier years on TV.

The hosts were presenting a story on how our voices change and get deeper as we age and to prove their point, they decided to do their own demonstration.

Both Emdur and Gillies took turns saying sentences they used to say when they were reporting decades ago, then compared it to how their younger selves would say it.

They anticipated the throwback footage with slightly worried expressions and Gillies was up first.

Her voice was considerably higher and softer and she rocked the classic haircut from the '90s and 2000s that was heavily influenced by “Rachel” from Friends.

“There you go,” Gillies said, mildly cringing.

“We were young. It was 23 years ago,” she added.

Emdur’s throwback footage went all the way back to the '80s when he was reporting for 7News.

“How good is that?” Larry laughed at the video.

“Button-down collars, my Dad’s old woollen tie.

“Here’s the thing. We were kids, right? I was trying very hard to, you know, sound like a man,” he quipped while deepening his voice.

“Between that age and this age, I know what’s happened to me and my voice!”

The duo giggled at the hair and make-up from the '90s and reminisced on how young they were.

“I had the full kick-out hairstyle!” Gillies commented.

“Our voices have DROPPED,” Larry added.

“Babies!” Kylie added. “Look at us now!”

Images: The Morning Show

Here’s what would happen to your body if you didn’t have your morning coffee

What happens when you skip coffee entirely?

Coffee is a morning constant for many, as reliable as the sunrise or the tides. Miss it, and you can feel dazed, confused and even risk a pounding headache. There’s a good reason for that: Caffeine produces some reliable physical changes in your body upon which you can easily become dependent.

With that first sip of coffee, caffeine enters your bloodstream and begins making its way to your brain where it blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine, according to the National Academy of Sciences. That, in turn, sets off the release of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin, causing a stimulant effect. Coffee’s so-called half-life – meaning the amount of time it takes for the amount of caffeine in the body to be reduced by 50 per cent – is about five hours on average.

That explains why the average energy drink or coffee buzz lasts about that long. But how quickly caffeine leaves your system depends on a number of things, including age, medical conditions, drug interactions and lifestyle habits (like smoking).

A shock to the system

So, no surprise, when you’re deprived of your morning coffee, you don’t just suffer due to routine alteration. You suffer chemically, too. As anybody who’s kicked their coffee habit will tell you: The side effects can be pretty noticeable and jarring. Some of the more common symptoms of caffeine withdrawal stem from the inherent perks of those multi cups of Joe.

Minus the kickstart to your metabolism, you’ll feel tired, sluggish, foggy-headed, and physically delayed, according to a review of studies published in 2020 in StatPearls. Researchers found that the more caffeine you consume, the more severe the withdrawal; but abstinence from even small amounts – we’re talking one cup of coffee per day – also produced symptoms of caffeine withdrawal. They kick in 12 to 24 hours after your last caffeine fix and may last up to nine days, says Dr Sherry A Ross, women’s health expert, author of She-ology: The She-quel.

“Caffeine is a stimulating drug that some people can easily become addicted to,” she explains. “Depending on the quantity and type of caffeine you are consuming daily, your body type and frequency of consumption can set you up for a caffeine addiction.”

Coffee's not all bad

Just because you can develop a dependence on your morning jolt doesn’t mean that cup of java belongs on the do-not-consume list. Just the opposite, in fact. A large review of studies published in 2017 in the journal BMJ found that coffee consumption is not only safe for most people (except pregnant women and women who are at an increased risk of fracture), it also provides a number of health benefits, especially for people with chronic liver disease.

The review also showed that participants who consistently drank at least three cups of coffee per day had a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, gallstone disease, cancer (including melanoma, leukaemia and prostate, endometrial, oral, and liver cancer), as well as cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and stroke as compared with coffee abstainers.

The trick, of course, is practicing portion control. The researchers found that the health benefits of coffee top out at three to four cups a day (as compared to none). That echoes the larger caffeine recommendation from the US Food and Drug Administration, which suggests no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day; that’s the amount in about four cups of coffee, 10 cans of cola, or two energy drinks.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

“My sex statue is famous”: Larry Emdur reacts to X-rated home reveal

The Morning Show host Larry Emdur has been making a name for himself in the world of game show TV for a few years hosting The Chase Australia, but despite his success, he’s still had his sights set on one more goal: making an appearance on the Have You Been Paying Attention? series.

And now, it seems like Larry’s dream has come true, though not exactly in the way he might have expected.

The popular host and his wife, Sylvie, have had their hands full recently trying to sell their Kangaroo Valley retreat, better known as Sky Ridge.

And while pictures of the property and its picturesque surrounds are available thanks to Belle Property, it wasn’t the property’s luxury four bedrooms or sweeping views that saw it get a mention on the Channel 10 game show.

Instead, it was a statue situated in the home’s main living space that caught their attention, with Have You Been Paying Attention? host Tom Gleisner asking his panel if they knew why Larry’s holiday home had gone viral throughout the week.

Ed Kavalee was quick to suggest that it was because “the price was right”, while Sam Pang asked if it was because “it has to do with the backyard, they found a shallow grave?”

Kavalee eventually got to the right answer, revealing that “there was, like, a pornographic statue in there.”

The statue in question could be found perched on top of Larry’s dining room table, and appeared to catch two people caught up in the moment having “X-rated raunchy sex”, as Larry himself put it.

The HYBPA? audience found it hilarious, and thankfully, Larry was more than happy to see the funny side of it all, too.

Taking to social media after learning about his unexpected cameo, Larry shared that he’d “always wanted to be on Have You Been Paying Attention? but not for a disgraceful reason like this.”

“My sex statue is famous,” he added, before sharing details of the property and that “YES !!!! "Are you coming back?" ABC loses another host

ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland has announced he’s “taking a break” one day after criticising the public broadcaster for failing Stan Grant.

Rowland made the announcement live on air that he will be “off on a break” and hosting had been “a real honour”.

He later took to Twitter, writing, “Take care and see you soon”.

ABC bosses have insisted Rowland is going on a “long-planned holiday” and will return to the show in a month's time.

Rowland urged the public broadcaster to call out racism more quickly and effectively after Grant revealed he was leaving Q+A.

Grant announced he was taking an indefinite break as host of Q+A on May 19 after he received “racial filth” on social media.

Rowland said in response to Grant’s racial abuse, “It hasn't just been weeks and months, it's been years that Stan's been copping this. Racism is a scourge.

“We all need to do better and that includes the ABC in calling it out and calling it out more quickly than we have in this country,” he added.

That same day Rowland posted a video of Grant’s compelling monologue alongside the caption, “Racism is a scourge. We all need to do better in calling it out, and that includes the ABC.”

Finance presenter on ABC News Breakfast Madeline Morris is said to join Rowland’s co-host Lisa Miller for the “next little while”.

After announcing his departure, Rowland thanked viewers at home.

“I just want to use this semi-regular opportunity to thank all of you, our viewers, you have been fabulous for this show in the time that I've been on the show, it's been great presenting to you,” he said.

“If it wasn't for you, the viewers, none of us would be here doing what we do, so it's been a real honour.”

One of his shocked co-hosts said, “That sounds kinda final. Are you coming back?", to which Rowland just smiled and didn’t respond.

Lisa Millar jokingly replied, “Absolutely! And he's bringing presents because that's the rule: wherever you're travelling to, come back with gifts.”

A spokesperson for ABC told Daily Mail Australia, “Michael is on a long-planned holiday and will be back on air 26 June.”

TV producer Robert McKnight responded to Rowland’s announcement, saying, “Very sorry to hear this. Michael is one of the best! Good luck to you, Michael.”

One Twitter user said the news was “very upsetting”.

“First I lose Stan Grant on Q&A. Now I loose you getting me through my mornings,”

She added, “Very angry reporters and presenters have been abandoned by their employers.”

There has been no suggestion Rowland feels “abandoned” by the ABC.

Rowland’s criticising of the ABC followed an appearance on the program by Ian Hamm, chair of the First Nations Foundation.

“Stan does his job very well. I think he has taken on the role of poking the bear of Australia where it's uncomfortable from time to time,” Hamm said.

“There is risk with that. The pushback of those who don't like it and who perhaps want Aboriginal people to be more compliant and pleasant.”

He added, “Stan's not walking away. He's just taking a break as anybody should in this circumstance.”

Hamm said 2023 in particular, given Australians voting on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in November would raise lingering tensions.

“Australia does have race relations problems and all it takes is scratching the surface and some very unpleasant sores can be exposed.”

“I have great hope for my nation, but I'm also realistic enough to know that this is not an easy journey.

“He's not alone and the rest of us are behind him and like him, we're not walking away. And we intend to pursue the right place for our people in this country.”

Rowland’s news led another ABC reporter to comment, “Hope you're OK”.

Rowland has presented on ABC News Breakfast since 2010 when he joined Virginia Trioli on the sofa.

Following his almost 13-year run as host, he’s become a fan favourite on the program.

Tensions have reached new heights between Australian networks Seven and Nine, with one broadcaster releasing a public statement in defence of its own reportedly lacklustre breakfast show audience numbers.

According to a new report from the Daily Telegraph, Nine’s Today has been lagging behind Seven’s Sunrise, with year-to-date average audience figures putting Sunrise ahead by 18 per cent.

At a national scale, things don’t look much better for Nine, with Sunrise’s average sitting at 363,000 viewers and 271,000 for Today - numbers confirmed by news.com.au.

The publication also reported that a source claimed executives were concerned about Today’s new line-up of Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo, and that it may not be connecting with their audiences as intended.

Nine’s director of morning television, Steven Burling, had plenty to say about the report, calling it a “fabrication and a distortion of the old fashioned and out of date overnight ratings system.”

He also noted that Today was actually in a favourable position with younger audiences, and considered that to be “all important”.

However, Sunrise weren’t too keen on accepting that fact, with a spokesperson for their network informing news.com.au that the ratings that had placed Sunrise at the top of the pecking order were, in fact, accurate.

“The numbers don’t lie,” they stated. “Sunrise has been number one for 19 years and is number one again this year, across the capital cities and nationally.

“Sunrise wins in Sydney, New South Wales, Victoria, Adelaide, South Australia, Perth, Western Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland. It is growing well in Melbourne. Today is ahead in Brisbane.”

They also had thoughts about Today being ahead with younger age groups, unwilling to believe it and instead arguing that Sunrise was the leader of the pack with the 25-54 group.

The same couldn’t be said for the 16-39 age bracket, with Today still seizing the win there.

The situation may yet change, as it’s already been in flux for a few years, with the two shows actually managing to narrow their gap in 2021.

2022 and 2023 were a different story, with that divide widening again, leading many to speculate that it may or may not have something to do with each breakfast programme’s chosen line-up.

David Koch has been hosting over at Sunrise for 20 years - with co-host Natalie Barr contributing in some capacity for the same span of time.

Meanwhile, Today has endured shake up after shake up in recent times, with Karl Stefanovic’s co-host Sarah Abo only joining him at the helm in 2023, after Allison Langdon left for a position at A Current Affair.

Images: Sunrise / Seven, Today / Nine

Breakfast Club star finally joins the baby club

Actor Anthony Hall and his wife, Lucia Oskerova, have shared the delightful news that they are expecting their first child together.

In a statement to People, the 54-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, opened up about how 34-year-old Lucia broke the news - a far cry from his The Breakfast Club character Brian Johnson’s stubborn “it's personal business. It's my personal, private business.”

"Lucia and I were at home,” he explained. “She surprised me by revealing that she was pregnant with an at-home pregnancy test. We were kissing, hugging, and thanking God. We immediately started dancing and laughing in our bathroom to celebrate the good news.”

Anthony went on to add that the couple will be having a boy, and that they already have a name for the little one picked out - “Michael Anthony the II”. Anthony’s full name is Michael Anthony Hall, but he changed it as many celebrities do upon joining the Screen Actors Guild in 1976.

Of their upcoming dive into parenthood this summer, he gushed, "my wife and I are feeling so blessed, excited and filled with joy in anticipation of our son being born this summer.”

Lucia took to Instagram to share their exciting news, with a post that also wished their fans a happy Valentine’s Day, tagging it “#babynews” and “#firsttimeparents”.

“Congratulations!” Wrote Boardwalk Empire actor Chris Caldovino, to the thanks of both expectant parents.

“I’ve been waiting FOREVER for the announcement of my new baby buddy! Love, love, love!” Declared one loved one, to whom Lucia responded that “it was starting to get hard to keep it a secret.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lucia Oskerova (@luciaoskerova)

Anthony had nothing but praise for his wife when asked about her pregnancy experience, telling People she’s been a “champ throughout”.

"She's tending to every important detail as a proud, expectant mother-to-be,” he explained. “She is now six and half months along.

"As a new father-to-be, I've been taking care of family business and making sure we all eat well, with a healthy diet of good foods — plenty of greens, vegetables, fresh fruit, and protein-rich food. “I’ll never speak to him again”: Samuel Johnson blows up at Molly Meldrum

While speaking to Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies on The Morning Show, a visibly upset Samuel Johnson blew up over 79-year-old Molly Meldrum’s bizarre behaviour at a recent Elton John concert.

Meldrum issued an apology for the “faulty belt buckle” incident, telling the Herald Sun that he “shouldn’t have ventured on stage, but I just wanted to tell Elton that I loved him. Some people thought it was part of the show. It wasn’t. Elton had no idea I was going to jump on stage. Elton might have been singing The Bitch Is Back but it was more a case of the idiot is back.”

Now Johnson has revealed something of a rift between himself and Meldrum – whom he portrayed in the 2016 miniseries “Molly”, and was rewarded for his efforts with a coveted Gold Logie.

It was during that 2017 Gold Logie acceptance speech that Meldrum mounted the stage and stole Johnson’s “million-dollar moment” when he was trying to raise funds for cancer, which claimed the life of his sister Connie.

Johnson told hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies that he has not said a word to Meldrum since that incident.

“I’ll never speak to him again. He cost my charity a million dollars that night

“I want to do him a service, not a disservice. I am a little bit uneasy talking about this.

“Firstly, thank you, Molly. He has helped me out of a legal pickle and I’ve known him for 20 years. He visited my sister in hospital when she was sick with cancer when she was 11 in the 1980s.

“I am really grateful for everything Molly has done in our lives. But at the same time, when I won the Gold Logie I was about to have my million-dollar moment and I told him specifically not to come on stage. He was not nominated, it was my moment.

“I wanted to make it about cancer and he wanted to make it about the network. He ended up coming up at the Gold Logies and it was my million-dollar moment gone wrong,” Johnson fumed.

“It was an absolute catastrophe. He warbled in a very drunken fashion for eight whole minutes. Now I have seen him do it again at the Elton John concert. Maybe it is time to hang up your hat, mate. I hope he is OK.”

Johnson also made it very clear that he did not believe Molly’s excuse and apology. “I thought his apology was false. I don’t believe it was a wardrobe malfunction,” he said.

“I believe that if it was a wardrobe malfunction, we would have seen his undies not his bum.

“For years, I have not said anything. I don’t want to say anything. Who are his minders? Is he OK? He should not be allowed out in the PM.

“He has two shots of vodka in his coffee in the morning. If I want to make any sense out of him, I need to see him before midday. Stop, Molly, stop!”

Images: Seven / Twitter

Why Channel 7 is happy that Ally Langdon left her role on The Today Show

Channel 7 is secretly happy at the changes their competition Channel 9 has done to the breakfast show.

The broadcaster announced that Ally Langdon will leave her role on The Today Show to replace Tracy Grimshaw as host of A Current Affair.

60 Minutes reporter Sarah Abo will take over Ally’s place next to Karl Stefanovic in the new year.

But now insiders are saying that this change will see Channel 7 continue to beat Channel 9 in the breakfast TV show ratings.

“They’ve weakened their position in the real battleground. Anyone can host A Current Affair, but breakfast TV is a different game,” a Seven insider told Diary.

However, this is not the case from Channel 9’s perspective because of veteran Sunrise reporter David “Kochie” Koch limiting his workload in the new year.

Earlier this year, it was unclear whether or not Kochie will remain the face of Sunrise alongside Nat Barr.

But he was able to successfully negotiate more flexibility to spend more time with his family.

“After 20 years, I've felt I needed more flexibility in my life with my wife Libby and my business interests,” he told The Australian in October.

“So when I mentioned leaving to Seven, (CEO) James (Warburton) very kindly asked me whether we could work together on a plan that I wanted, which also kept my connection to the network and my focus on Sunrise.”

His decision is the only comfort that Channel 9 have at winning the breakfast show ratings after a very long time.

“Kochie leaving marks a huge opportunity for Today - there is no denying that,” a Nine insider said.

“He is a breakfast TV behemoth. He has underpinned Sunrise's dominance for two decades.

“The idea of a breakfast TV landscape without him gives Today clear air for the first time in 20 years and there is a real sense of opportunity here.

“It means Karl will now be the most senior presence on either show... and that could resonate with viewers.”

Image: Instagram

I’ve made some life-long friends and feel very lucky to have worked with such an amazing team.”

Jonathan however will remain at the network as he continues to work with the Fox Footy team.

“When the opportunity presented itself to work alongside Chrissie, Sam and Deano seven years ago it cemented my family’s decision to make the move to Melbourne and start a new chapter post-footy,” he said.

“I’ve shared some life-changing moments with our listeners and the team have become like family to me.

“I’m grateful to the Nova family and our listeners for the opportunities in both Brisbane and Melbourne over the past 17 years and finish up feeling proud of what we’ve created together.”

Image: Nova

Australia’s top breakfast TV hosts attack Meghan Markle

Australia’s top breakfast TV show hosts have attacked Meghan Markle for comparing herself to Nelson Mandela.

The Duchess of Sussex got candid in a tell-all interview with The Cut where she spoke about the Royal Family’s “red flags”, the difficulty of moving to California, losing her father and trying to "forgive" her in-laws.

The Suits actor was told by a cast member of the Lion King that South Africans “danced in the street” when she married Prince Harry - just like when “Mandela was freed from prison”.

The Today Show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon, along with Sunrise co-host Natalie Barr have slammed Meghan Markle for her “tone deaf” interview.

“It's hard to see how that would sit with [the Royal Family], especially the Mandela references,” Karl said.

“That one, I feel, is tone-deaf,” Ally responded.

“I think [Meghan is] probably a little misunderstood, don't you reckon?” Karl then asked.

“Oh, you're changing your tune, are you, Karl?” Ally asked her co-host.

“Yeah, I think it's time to support her, especially after the Mandela comments. Anyone who compares themselves to Mandela, I think, is fair enough,” Karl responded.

“Even if it was said... to share that... Anyway, they're living their ‘quiet life’, as they wished,” Ally ended.

On Sunrise, Nat Barr called the Duchess a “tosser” for her comments in the interview saying she “couldn't even stomach getting through the whole article”.

“I think in Australia we'd say she's just full of it. She's a tosser. She's a total tosser! That's how we would describe her. I just can't... the way she speaks,” Nat said.

“I think she has a very different narrative, perhaps, in the U.S. to what is being accepted in the UK,” Edwina Bartholomew responded.

“Or just everywhere in the world!' Barr said.

Images: Seven/Nine
